The Santa Monica Mountains form the southern boundary of Thousand Oaks, and the National Recreation Area manages over 500 miles of trails throughout the range. The mountains include the 67-mile Backbone Trail that connects the range from east to west, as well as hundreds of shorter day hikes with varying difficulty levels. The area is accessible by car and on foot from Thousand Oaks neighborhoods, making outdoor recreation immediate for residents.

The mountains support diverse recreational use: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and botanical exploration. The National Park Service documents nearly 100 mountain lions in the range and conducts ongoing research on wildlife. There are also historical sites on the public lands, including old movie ranches and Native American heritage sites. The area also offers stargazing and sunset viewing opportunities from high elevation vantage points overlooking the coast and valleys.

Many Thousand Oaks families organize their lives around access to outdoor space and the ability to spend time in the mountains with their children and extended family. Life insurance is about protecting those patterns: the income that pays for the house in this location, the years when outdoor activities and time together are central to how a family lives, and ensuring that if something happens, the people depending on that income and those routines can stay in the community and maintain their way of life.
